What is decane isomers?

Decane is a hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C10H22. It has a linear, straight-chain isomer (n-decane) and nine branched-chain isomers (isomers with different carbon atom arrangements). The branched-chain isomers are named based on the position of the branch on the carbon chain.

Some of the common branched-chain isomers of decane include:

  • 2-methylheptane
  • 3-methylheptane
  • 4-methylheptane
  • 2,2-dimethylhexane
  • 2,3-dimethylhexane
  • 2,4-dimethylhexane
  • 3,3-dimethylhexane
  • 3-ethylhexane
  • 4-ethylhexane

The physical and chemical properties of the isomers vary depending on their structures. For example, the branched isomers generally have lower boiling points and lower melting points than the straight-chain isomer due to the decreased surface area and weaker intermolecular forces. Additionally, the branched isomers may have different reactivity and combustion characteristics.
